New short stay car park tariff could be introduced

A new short stay option for commuters and shoppers using car parks near Dewsbury railway station could be introduced.

Visitors using the council’s car parks at Wellington Road in the town can stay for up to five hours for £2.

But a new short stay 50p per-hour tariff will be offered to people using the car parks if Kirklees Council’s cabinet gives the go-ahead next week.

The Wellington Road Station and Wellington Road West car parks also currently offer a £4 tariff to visitors who want to stay for more than five hours.

Those current £2 and £4 tariffs will remain regardless.

A report, prepared by council officers ahead of the cabinet meeting on Tuesday, recommended the plans for approval.

Both car parks are within walking distance of Dewsbury town centre and the town’s railway station.

And they are used by patients and visitors to the nearby Dewsbury Health Centre, on Wellington Road.

Coun Eric Firth (Lab, Dewsbury East), said in the report: “I support the recommendation to introduce a 50p per hour tariff.

“This will facilitate shorter stays for patients attending the health centre and visitors to the nearby businesses, whilst maintaining all day tariffs for commuters.”

Another option being considered by councillors includes keeping the £2 and £4 tariffs, but creating a £1 charge for parking for up to two hours.

But the cabinet is expected to approve the first option.

The report to the meeting said: “Parking customers (shoppers and commuters), will now benefit from a better, more flexible use of two of the council’s parking facilities, with the aim of providing a better service for customers, as well as give visitors to the health centre, more options, in terms of parking time and tariffs.”

Councillors whose wards could be affected be the changes have been consulted.
