New station still on track

Metro has denied rumours that work has already started on the long-awaited Low Moor Rail Station.

Heavy goods vehicles have been spotted adjacent to the site of the proposed Low Moor Rail Station where New Works Road meets Cleckheaton Road.

But transport authority Metro insists this was nothing to do with the proposed station, which is planned to open next year.

A spokesman for Metro said: “Network Rail have replaced their old footbridge.

“Since the weather has been bad recently, they waited a while before replacing it, so people have jumped to conclusions that this is the start of building on Low Moor Station, when it is not.”

The footbridge is located further up the track near the old Transperience museum site.

However, Metro said final plans for the site would be submitted to Bradford Council in weeks rather than months, and was confident of gaining permission in the near future.

The spokesman added: “I think it’s just a case of dotting the ‘I’s and crossing the ‘T’s now.”

The news has been welcomed byWyke councillor David Robinson (Ind), who has long campaigned for a new station at Low Moor.

He said: “I have been involved in trying to get a station here for more than 10 years, so I am pleased the plans are still on track for opening in 2015.”

He added there could be one last stumbling block to building the station.

“Some of the land that we need for the station still needs to be bought,” he said.

“The company that owns it has gone into administration, but we are confident we can come to a deal with the administrators.

“I don’t think this should complicate things – we don’t want to have to do a compulsory purchase order, but I doubt we will need to do that.”

The station is predicted to open in late 2015 – 50 years after the previous Low Moor railway station was decommissioned. Plans for the new station include platforms with footbridge and ramps, a 117-space car park with disabled parking bays, drop off point and cycle parking.

Metro says there will also be modern waiting shelters, lighting, seating and CCTV, with direct access to and from the adjacent Spen Valley Greenway. Work on the station is expected to be completed in December 2015.
