'People magnet' loses battle against cancer

Family and friends will gather today for the funeral of a brave and much-loved man, who has died from leukaemia just two months after he was married.

Adrian Lee Young, of White Lee Road, was born in Leeds and also lived in Nottingham, before moving to Batley at the age of 11.

He attended Carlinghow School and Batley Boys' High School and worked as a duct erector for Cades Ltd in Bradford.

Described by wife Ann-Marie as a 'people magnet', Adrian made friends wherever he went and had friends as far away as Australia, who he kept in touch with after spending a year travelling the country in 2001.

His mum, Linda, said: "Where most people would just have a handful of close friends, Adrian had lots.

"He was one of those people everyone liked and he loved to live life to the full."

On May 28 this year, Adrian - who was 35 - married Ann-Marie, just 11 days after finding out his condition was terminal.

Friends and family organised every aspect of the wedding for the couple after his doctor wrote to the registrar asking for the usual 17-day notification period to be wavered.

Despite suffering from leukaemia and having to undergo gruelling chemotherapy, Adrian was determined the condition would not beat him.

He enjoyed swimming, travelling, spending time in his garden and cycling, which he did until he was no longer physically able.

Ann-Marie said: "Throughout everything he never complained and he was so strong.

"When he left hospital he was not expected to last more than a week, but he was with us for another two months.

"His first goal was to be here for our wedding and then he wanted to see the World Cup through, which he did. He was so strong.

"He was such a loving, fun person to be around. He was so down to earth and everyone wanted to be his friend."

Adrian also leaves dad Robert, brother Scott and sisters Kirsten, Nicky and Debbie.

Adrian's funeral will be held today at St Mary's RC Church, Batley, followed by committal at Batley Cemetery.
