A FAMILY’S pet Staffie was almost killed in an attack by a pit bull type dog.

Steve Brearley was walking Milo, an eight-year-old rescue dog, on fields in Cawley Lane at 12.30pm on Monday, when she was attacked by the bigger dog he described as a brown pit bull cross.

Milo’s owner, Steve’s daughter-in-law Rebecca Welburn, said: “Steve was walking Milo around the wooded area when someone shouted to him to pick her up, but before he could get to her the dog came flying down and grabbed her and wouldn’t let go.

“The owner was telling Steve to kick the dog in the head to make it let go and he had to kick it loads of times – in the end he had to lie on Milo to get the other dog away.”

Rebecca said the man gave a name and two addresses to Steve – but they discovered these were fake.

She said they rushed eight-year-old Milo to the vet, who said her injuries were so severe she was lucky to be alive.

“Milo now has dozens of stitches and will need further treatment, costing the family hundreds of pounds.,” she said.

Rebecca, of, North Street, Heckmondwike, said: “I walk my dogs two or three times a day on that field and I have never seen that dog before, which is unusual.

“Milo doesn’t want to go out. She must feel dreadful.

“The owner knew it was a dangerous dog or he wouldn’t have shouted Steve to pick Milo up.

“I don’t know why he was walking it without a lead.

“I don’t want any families to go through that – to see your pet come back with injuries like that is horrific.”
