Planning row newts are on the move
A GREAT crested newt habitat is to be relocated after a lengthy row between residents and councillors.
As reported in the Guardian back in February, plans to demolish Prospect Mills/Shaped Wires in Scholes Lane, Scholes, and build 41 houses and six apartments on the site were withdrawn by developers David Wilson Homes.
The move followed complaints about the relocation of the newts, which live in the old mill pond.
Coun Kath Pinnock (Lib Dem, Cleck) raised concerns about the newts' habitat, saying the population had decreased considerably in the last 40 years and the council listed the amphibians as needing "special attention in the area".
Kirklees planning officer Nick Willock told the Guardian the colony would be relocated on the same site but situated so the newts would not be affected should any building work commence.
He added: "There might be an opportunity in the future for the council to purchase the site so the area receives nature reserve status. This would be better for the newts and there could be the chance for local groups and residents to get involved."
Mr Willock said the developers were still in negotiations with the council regarding plans for the mill.
"The plans are currently being amended, as there were quite a few objections from residents and councillors in relation to the three-storey aspect of the properties, and the access from New Popplewell Lane."
