Post box and grates stolen

Grates have been stolen in Spen.

Grates have been stolen in Spen.

Police in Spen are on the lookout for metal thieves after a post box and two grates were pinched in the space of 12 hours.

The post box was stolen between 11.30pm on Sunday and 8.07am on Monday from the corner of Nunroyd and Redfearn Avenue, Heckmondwike.

Later that morning, thieves struck again this time making off with two metal grates from Hare Park Lane, Hightown.

Insp Tim Holland, from the Spen Valley NPT, said: “They were either after the postbox because it was metal, or they wanted its contents, but the fact that grates have been stolen as well suggests that thieves were after scrap metal to sell.

“The grates theft is particularly unusual, as it was done in broad daylight – so someone may have seen it.

“We would advise anyone who used the post box after 6pm on Sunday to consider re-sending their post, or contacting the recipient as their mail has been stolen along with the letter box.

“We would also ask people to be vigilant and question whether someone removing street furniture, such as post boxes or grates, is a legitimate worker.”

Anybody with information on wither of the incidents should call the Spen Valley NPT on 001924 206367.
