A student has been presented with a top food award by Princess Anne.

James Barker was named Best Food Apprentice 2012 the in the Meat Training Council and Institute of Meat Awards – and was presented with his award by HRH The Princess Royal.

Former Whitcliffe Mount pupil James completed an apprenticeship in butchery at Leeds Thomas Danby college while working at Haigh’s Farm Shop.

The college nominated him for the award and James travelled to the Butchers’ Hall in London along with 20 other award winning students from across the country.

James is now working for a meat processing company in Ireland while studying for his degree in food business management.

He said: “It was a very exciting day for me. I had worked hard and was proud to think that something I had achieved was worthy of Royal recognition.”
