Pupils film ‘Horrible Histories’

CHILDREN from Hightown have been stepping back in time to help put the finishing touches to a community project.

Pupils from High Bank School were approached by Spen Valley Civic Society to create artwork depicting what life was like for children in Victorian times, and their pictures will be used to make an eye-catching mural on the Liversedge Sparrow Park which the society opened earlier this year.

To coincide with the project, the year five/six children held a Victorian Day, coming to school in period dress.

Teacher Sarah Rees said: “They stood when an adult entered the room, wore the dunce’s cap etc. We filmed our version of Horrible Histories (Vile Victorians) featuring scenes from schools and factories as well as songs the child wrote and performed. Afterwards parents watched the Victorians class assembly and the still life paintings were displayed in the background featuring Victorian artefacts such as a carpet beater, iron and washboard. It was a brilliant week. I’m very proud of them all.”

The pupils also raised £130 for Barnardo’s children’s charity with a harvest themed non-uniform day when they wore autumn colours.

The finished mural will also feature an archive picture of pupils at the old National School which was opposite the sparrow park at Halifax Road/Knowler Hill.
