Pupils give generously for Tanzania

PUPILS have raised hundreds of pounds for charity after hearing a talk by a visitor from Tanzania.

Arthur Mauya, from the African country, met pupils from Roberttown and Hightown and spoke to them about life in his village, which is linked to the parishes of Hartshead, Hightown, Roberttown and Scholes.

The Rev Richard Burge said: “Arthur told the children about the animals, the schools and life in Tanzania. The children were amazed. He told them about the need to protect people from mosquitos with nets that cost just £5. And he told them that children would love to have some footballs to play with!”

“The children at the schools said we needed to have a special harvest festival. We had three harvest auctions, a penalty shootout and some very generous donations, which brought our total to just under £700.

“Alongside this we were still able to support our local charities, sending supplies to Daybreak, Dewsbury Women’s Refuge and St George’s Crypt in Leeds.

“It has been a very special harvest festival and a great chance to make a difference near and far. We would like to thank all our local schools and communities for their generosity.”
