Race is on to sign up for the Great North Kirklees Run

hundreds of children will put their fitness levels to the test when they take part in the annual Great North Kirklees Run.

The event takes place on Thursday at Spen Valley Sports College involving around 300 pupils from partner primary schools.

However older kids and adults can also get in on the act by taking part in a Family Fun 5k run around the school playing fields.

The event has taken place for several years, but this year is the first time that adults have been involved.

Shaun Fox, from Legacy Sport which organises the run and delivers sporting programmes in schools and the wider community, said the event was part of the Great Spen Valley Health Challenge which was launched earlier this year – and supported by the Spenborough Guardian.

Mr Fox said: “The Great Spen Valley Health Challenge is all about promoting healthy lifestyles in our locality.

“It would be fantastic to see adults setting a good example to young people by making an effort to get involved. We would really like to see people in the Spen Valley area making small, manageable changes to their routine to promote better health.

“The distance of 5k has been deliberately selected as it is an achievable distance for beginners. We invite people to walk the course if they do not feel that they could jog. Simply getting active can make a huge difference.

“The aim is to raise money for Forget Me Not Trust – a very worthwhile cause as they strive to make the lives of young people as comfortable as possible with the opening of the new hospice in Huddersfield.”

Participants in the Family Fun 5k will be asked to donate £5. Email register@legacysport.co.uk for a sponsor form, or just turn up on the day. The children’s races – which are free to enter – begin at 4.15pm and the adults’ race around 5.30pm.
