A GROUP of engineers in Cleckheaton have big plans for what has been described as a “hidden gem” of the Spen Valley.

Spenborough Model Engineers, who run the Spenborough Model Railway in Royds Park, have plans to create a miniature museum at the railway’s premises in Littletown.

The premises, which recently got new signage, already displays a number of photographs, but there are plans to make a miniature museum by next spring.

Publicity officer Keith Ainley said: “We got the idea when Coun David Sheard visited and he suggested we had a bigger exhibitition which would give people the chance to learn more about local heritage. We are hoping to have something in place for April 2013, which is the start of our new season.”

The Leeds New Line, which was decommissioned in 1960, travelled close to the current site of the model railway at the top of Royds Park.

Coun Sheard paid tribute to the group, and said that the hard work by all the volunteers at the site did not get the recognition it deserved.

“I think the railway is a hidden gem of the Spen Valley,” he said.

“And the hard work and expertise that the engineers do there is something that really needs to be passed to younger generations.

“It would be great to have a museum to educate people about the area – a lot of schools visit the railway, and it would be nice for them to have something to help them find out more about the old railway and the history of where they live.”

The Spenborough Model Engineers are currently on the lookout for old photographs and memorabilia for the museum – anyone who has anything they want to donate can email mail@spenborough.me.uk. The railway is open for rides this Sunday from 1pm-4.30pm.
