Rail station plans on the right track

FULL STEAM AHEAD: Low Moor Rail Station could be in line for extra funds.

FULL STEAM AHEAD: Low Moor Rail Station could be in line for extra funds.

Low Moor could finally be a step closer to a new rail station by the end of today as Metro hopes to secure £3.3m of extra funding for the project.

Plans for a railway station at Low Moor date back to 2000, but have faced continued delays. However, current hopes to have a new station in place by late 2014 could be a step closer after local councillors submitted a bid for extra funding.

A meeting will take place today between members of the Metro transport authority, local councillors and Network Rail in an attempt to secure the £3.3m from Network Rail’s New Station Fund.

Wyke councillor David Warburton said: “We are very hopeful – should we get the go-ahead today, I can see reason to be positive.

“We have already had plenty of support for the building of a new station from residents from as far as Cleckheaton.”

Currently, there is a £5.5m budget that has been ringfenced for the building of the station, but the extra money, which will take the budget to nearly £9m, will help account for unexpected costs.

Metro chairman Coun James Lewis said: “Metro and its partners are still fully committed to building a station at Low Moor.

“We all recognise that Low Moor brings strategic, social, regeneration and economic benefits, and will be a much-needed addition to West Yorkshire’s local rail network.

“However, because of the additional costs we have made a bid for funding from the New Station Fund, which would allow the project to proceed more quickly and with a smaller contribution from council tax-payers.”
