DIGGERS: Redrow Homes workers digging up fields at Lower Blacup.
GREEN fields have been dug up by a homes company in preparation for a housing estate.
Workers from Redrow Homes have been diggingpart of the fields at Lower Blacup to investigate the condition of the ground.
Earlier this year Redrow announced a plan to build 61 homes on part of the land bordering the Ashbourne estate off Hightown Road, between Cleckheaton and Hightown.
But in July the Guardian revealed the plans could be four times bigger than that.
People living near the site are against the scheme to develop the land.
More than 150 people went to a public meeting in June where staff from Redrow outlined the proposals and showed images.
Barbara Bird, whose late husband Geoffrey bought and restored Lower Blacup Farm in 1997, has vowed to fight the plans to preserve the farm, which would be surrounded by the new estate.
And Cleckheaton councillor Kath Pinnock has said the plans will be fought ‘tooth and nail’.
Workers were spotted on the fields at the end of last month, digging up the ground with heavy machinery.
The land is known locally as the cuniver and is an ancient footpath linking Cleckheaton and Hightown.
A spokeswoman for Redrow Homes said: “An investigation has been carried out into the condition of the ground at Lower Blacup as we work towards submitting a planning application for the site.”
