Regulars toast pub's real ale success

LOCALS at a Cleckheaton pub have raised a glass to celebrate its success after it was named CAMRA pub of the season.

The Marsh in Bradford Road received the Summer 2010 award from CAMRA's Heavy Woollen branch chairman Mike Roebuck.

The pub was bought in the 1990s by Old Mill Brewery and since 2002 it has been run by Neil and Karen Barker.

CAMRA branch secretary Paul Dixey said: "Neil is proud of the quality of his beers, which led to their nomination for this award.

"The tasty, dark mild is a good seller among up to five Old Mill cask ales available. A seasonal guest is usually available, designed to match the season. The Marsh is a traditional community pub appealing to all ages, where the music is never too loud, and relaxation and conversation are paramount.

"The pub remained busy through the smoking ban and the recession, and the Brewery has recently extended it with a smart, conservatory-style extension which has further boosted trade, and traditional pub food is now available.

"An extensive covered area outside provides an alternative pleasant spot to relax."

Neil said they were delighted to receive the award again.

"It's good to get recognition and to know that people do care about good beer," he said.

"We look after our beer well and make sure it's consistent. People do like real ale, and if you look around all the pubs which are doing well are those which sell real ale."
