Religious education success for school

A Heckmondwike school is the first in Yorkshire to win a top religions education award.

Heckmondwike Grammar School has been awarded the RE Quality Mark at gold standard. The award recognises outstanding learning in religious education and is given following an assessment and interviews with pupils and staff by the Religious Education Council of England and Wales, which organises the award.

Helen Hallas, head of RE, said: “It was a gruelling experience, and took many hours of preparation – it felt like our own mini-Ofsted!

“We aim to make RE the highlight of a student’s week. We try to make RE fun, exciting and relevant to our students today. We have worked hard at introducing new topics and a wide variety of learning strategies.

“This does not come at the expense of assessment – RE results are just about the best in the school at GCSE and A Level with every student gaining A* or A grades at GCSE last year, and every student gaining an A* to C grade at A-level.”
