Report had me in tears
KNOW we are tired of seeing politicians blubbing in public!
But last night, for the second time I can remember, I was moved to tears by the BBC evening news report. A girl had been raped and murdered by a criminal who had been released early from prison and had targeted her on Facebook.
I mourn every senseless loss of life, but this time felt overwhelming anger that, yet again, an appalling crime was perpetrated by someone who should have been behind bars. The murderer had previously been jailed for two violent rapes in 1996.
Another report was of Jon Venables, the torturer and killer of toddler James Bulger, who has allegedly committed further crimes after having been released early from prison. This hot on the heels of two murders in Huddersfield, and the deaths of two children in Bradford and Dewsbury.
It appals me that this level of depravity exists, and even more when the Home Secretary and Justice Secretary are heard to celebrate falling crime rates.
I sincerely hope, for all our sakes, that the incoming Conservative Government sticks to its policies of prison building and stiffer sentences.
