Sarah’s high note
Flautist Sarah Bennett.
BIRKENSHAW flautist Sarah Bennett is celebrating a real golden moment.
The 20-year-old has clinched a gold medal in a prestigious music challenge.
The medal she received at the Royal Northern College of Music’s 2012 Gold Medal Weekend is the highest offered in performance.
“I am absolutely thrilled,” she said. “It is such an honour to have won a gold medal as it holds so much prestige and is something I am extremely proud of.”
Eleven students competed in the event at Manchester in front of a judging panel of four.
Sarah is in her second year at the RNCM. She said: “I spent most of the year preparing for the concert, as learning some of the more contemporary pieces in my programme needed a lot of research and studying, as well as practising!
“It is the perfect way to finish what has been an exciting year.”
Sarah also performs with the award-winning Tempest, a flute trio comprising fellow RNCM students Helen Wilson and Holly Melia. Her recent win means all three flautists now have a gold medal, considered to be a major achievement for the young ensemble.
