A young actor is delighted to be heading back close to where his career began, to perform in his first professional play.
Scott Oakley, 24, who appeared in Spen Amateurs’ Full Monty in 2010, will star in his first professional role as the interrogator in Bobby Gould in Hell, a comedy by two time Oscar nominee and American playwright David Mamet.
Scott said: “I was over the moon to receive such a brilliant role and I cannot wait to be performing so close to where my stage career began.”
He said he was extremely thankful to Spen Amateurs who, he said, gave him the confidence to perform.
He said: “They gave me my start in theatre, so I certainly owe them a great deal. Their guidance and passion really helped me grow as a performer, giving me the artistic room I needed to try things out and see what worked.”
He paid a special thanks to Judith Morris, a director, choreographer, and lifelong member of the society.
“She has given me lots of encouragement over the last few years, giving me the confidence to perform, and she remains a lifelong friend,” he said.
Judith said Scott had always shown great potential.
“He is a very talented young man, he has got the right attitude and is very determined. He can sing, dance and act, he’s got everything,” she said.
Scott was delighted to hear they were bringing the show to Leeds. He said: “It’s great to be back in Yorkshire, especially getting to bring this great show back to where I started.
“I’m glad that I have the opportunity to see old friends and I hope they will be able to come along and see my development and progression into the professional acting world.”
Spen Amateurs have an impressive record in nurturing talent. Other notables include Jennifer Burrows, who made her professional debut in Fiddler on the Roof, and Craig Cowdroy, who trained at Mountview Academy of Theatre and Arts, London, and is now a professional producer.
Their next production is The Vicar of Dibley which runs at the town hall, Cleckheaton, from May 21-23.
Auditions are taking place this Sunday at the REA Rooms, Kelloe Street, Cleckheaton. Anybody interested is asked to contact Robert Ormondroyd on 01274 877166.
