Sex offender found guilty of attempted kidnap

A CONVICTED sex offender has been found guilty of trying to abduct a 13-year-old girl.

A jury at Leeds Crown Court took two-and-a-half hours this afternoon to find Roy Barton, 30, guilty of the attempted kidnap in Middleton, south Leeds, on January 9 this year.

He was also found guilty of one charge of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child and five counts of breaching a sexual offences prevention order (SOPO).

He was found not guilty of one charge of breaching the SOPO.

Barton, of Wakefield Road, Gildersome, but who lived in Westgate, Heckmondwike, at the time of the offences, is due to be sentenced on August 5.

Judge Scott Wolstenholme told him the court needed to consider whether he was a a serious offender - he said in particular the attempted kidnap had been “potentially very serious”.

“You could be a very dangerous offender,” he said.

Barton was remanded in custody until sentence.
