Sitcome pilot is reel-y promising

A JOINER has swapped his screwdriver for a script to pen a new sitcom.

Andrew Dorree, 28, from Birkenshaw, hopes that the comedy, which takes a candid look at life on a building site, will be a massive success.

Make it Plumb tells the story of two builders who struggle to stay afloat in the recession.

Andrew said: "It's taken me until now to realise what I would like to do in life and writing is what I love.

"I came up with the idea while watching another sitcom which I thought was terrible. So with Make it Plumb we've gone back to basics with the humour.

"It's a cross between Only Fools and Horses and Auf Wiedersehen Pet but with some colourful language thrown in with it being set around a building site."

Andrew teamed up with his pal Nathan Camponi, 25, who began directing the show's pilot last week.

The pair have enough material for 18 episodes and have drafted in the help of family and friends to act as extras.

Andrew, who heads up the construction department at Leeds Academy, will play one of the lead characters, Stan.

He added: "My dad, brother and granddad will play a group of bricklayers which is what they do for a living so they'll be filmed in their work gear.

"I started my apprenticeship on a building site and the show will be based on my personal experiences. It will be like watching a documentary and a soap opera at the same time."

The sitcom will be filmed in Birkenshaw, but will also feature other places such as Leeds City Centre and Middleton, near the White Rose Shopping Centre.

Andrew said he had thoroughly enjoyed penning the script and hopes his work is snapped up by a broadcaster soon.

He added: "I can come up with an idea in the middle of the night and have to get up to write it down. At school, I didn't want to learn about Shakespeare, I just wanted to write.

"It's in my blood."
