SPEN families have been putting on a blooming good show of bulb-planting.

More than 1,000 bulbs were planted Cleckheaton’s West End Park as an ‘endless stream’ of people turned up to take part. The event was organised by the Friends of West End Park.

The flowers included 200 native bluebells - specially sourced by Hartshead Nursery - and countless daffodils, tulips, crocuses and snowdrops donated by residents.

ATA builders merchants helped by supplying timber to create a planter and trim around a new picnic area dug out by volunteers, levelled and covered with chippings from Kirklees forestry department.

Friends chairman Martin Webster said: “We were overwhelmed by the generosity of local businesses and residents.

“An endless stream of families brought bulbs and we were especially pleased that children joined in to help.

“The new picnic area is aimed at them, so we will now have to work hard to raise money for tables and benches to complete the project before next summer.”
