Taxi death sparks petition

KIRKLEES Council is backing an anti-racism petition that began after a taxi driver was killed in Huddersfield.

Dad-of-three Mohammad Parvaiz, 41, was killed in an incident which police have described as racially motivated.

The petition has been started by former council leader and leader of the Lib Dems Coun Kath Pinnock.

In the first few days it was signed by 1,000 people.

She said: “I hope out of this awful deed there can be a ray of hope. It will come if we unite to kick racism out of Kirklees.

“This is a non-party political campaign.

“Indeed it has the support of all the leaders of the political groups on the council.”

Copies of the petition have been sent to all council workplaces, tenants and residents’ associations, churches, mosques and Sikh temples.
