A YOUNG computer whizz has developed a smartphone game after teaching himself how to do it.

Heckmondwike Grammar School pupil Qais Patankar, 14, heard about an American teen who designed his own phone game, so decided to have a go himself.

He learned how to programme them using online tutorials – and has spent the past four months programming his first platform game, called Sticky Destroyer.

Qais, who wants to develop a career in software engineering, said: “I heard about a 14-year-old boy in America who made his own game.

“I thought, if he can do it, I can too.

“Qais, of Walkley Lane, Heckmondwike, said he started work on the game in September and hoped it would be ready by May.

He said: “Once I have finished the game I will look at new concepts that haven’t been tried out before.

“For me it’s not about the money, it’s about the career. I really want to be a software engineer when I am older.”

Describing the game, Qais added: “It is a time arcade game and you can race against other players over the internet.

“The game allows players to customise their own character and add clothing. You control the character by touching the screen. The aim is the destroy all the blocks and get to the end. Some of the blocks give you special abilities, like extra lives or a trampoline.”
