Tesco renew quest for a superstore
SUPERMARKET giant Tesco has renewed its pursuit of a new Cleckheaton superstore which would create 150 new jobs.
After seeing its previous proposal rejected by planning chiefs in February, Tesco has submitted new plans for a store, petrol station, car park and retail units.
The company was first granted permission to redevelop in 2008, but it did not include a new petrol station, so a fresh plan was submitted for a larger store which did. However it was refused.
Deborah Hayeems, Tesco corporate affairs manager, said: "We have now submitted a proposal for a store and a petrol filling station with the same retail sales area as was previously granted in 2008 so we hope this will meet with approval.
"I'd like to thank local residents and customers for their ongoing support for our plans to improve the store at Cleckheaton. We know how important a petrol filling station is so we've worked hard to find a solution that can incorporate this."
Controversially, the latest plans also retain the 11 retail units along Railway Street that the council 'encouraged' Tesco to include, as a link between the supermarket and Cleckheaton town centre. Their inclusion prompted the Spenborough Chamber of Trade to object to the application.
Chamber president Keith Joplin said: "We want to reiterate our stance in opposing the introduction of the 11 retail units. If these are to be included in any new application, then we will formally object once again."
In February, Tesco offered to remove the extra shops from their plans but had their application rejected because of the effect such a large store would have on neighbouring Heckmondwike's 'vibrancy and vitality'.
Tesco confirmed it is are 'flexible' about the additional shops and will listen to the views of local traders and residents before the planning sub-committee makes a decision on the application later in the year.
