Three cars in smash hours after lights failure reported

THREE vehicles were involved in a smash at the Yew Tree traffic lights in Liversedge - three hours after they were reported out of action.

The accident happened at around 4pm on Saturday, when one of the cars crashed into a traffic signal in Norristhorpe Lane at its junction with the A62.

Norristhorpe resident Andrea Ryan said the traffic lights at the busy junction had not been working since 11.30am that morning.

She said: "We went out about noon and they'd stopped working and they were still out when we came back about 1pm. I couldn't see any workmen or any temporary signs or anything so I rang the Kirklees' Highways Roadwatch One Stop Service (ROSS) and reported the failure.

"It was busy with it being bank holiday and I could see it was getting a bit hairy.

"When my son came back at about 4.30pm he said there had been a crash and the police and ambulance were there and the signals were still not working.

"How urgent does it need to be for the council to do something about it? I did my bit and reported it but they didn't act on it and as a result there was an accident."

A police spokeswoman said officers were called to the scene at 4pm on Saturday to reports of a road traffic collision.

She added: "One car had hit the traffic signal on Norristhorpe Lane at its junction with Leeds Road.

"The traffic light failure will form a part of the investigation into the cause of the accident."

A spokesman for Kirklees Council said: "Following the report of a traffic lights failure, we aim to have people on site within four hours. Staff were at the scene within this timescale and our repair crew were on site repairing the lights at the time of the incident.

"We are currently investigating the cause of the traffic lights failure and will work alongside the police in their investigation."

Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to contact the police on 0845 6060606.
