Top glass talent at art show

An arts event at Dewsbury Minster was the conclusion of a 12-month project that centred around the stained glass windows of St Johns Church.

Saba Rifat presented the Geometric FriendsArt Installation at the Minster on May 14 following a series of workshops which took place over a year.

The sessions encouraged participants to create geometric paper bricks, which were inspired by patterns and colours featured in the stained glass windows at St Johns Church in Dewsbury Moor.

The artworks were brought together and constructed to form the final installation piece.

Ms Rifat said: “Working closely with different members of my community over the past 12 months has given me a glimpse into the fascinating lives of those who live around me.

“The workshops have enabled those who may be a little reluctant to show their creative side, to contribute to a project which reflects the spirit and diversity of Dewsbury. We are lucky enough to have the beautiful St Johns Church on our doorstep, the geometric designs of the stained glass windows echo traditional Islamic patterns and these provided the inspiration for the artworks.”

Using traditional compass and ruler drawing techniques, participants drew and developed patterns through tessellation, grids and 3D shapes

And the Mayor of Kirklees, Coun Paul Kane, dropped into the Minster to take a look at the works.

The event also included henna painting, badge making andscreen printing, along with a traditional drum performance andguided tours ofthe Minster.

Ms Rifat added: “I hope that the participants involved in the project are now enthused to explore more local architecture and view shapes with a renewed perspective.”
