Pupils and staff at Spen Valley Sports College are in celebratory mood after their Ofsted inspection.

The school was visited by inspectors at the end of January and their report, which has just been made public, has found it is ‘good’.

Headteacher Ian Ellam, who took over the reins of the school in September, said everyone was thrilled with the inspectors’ findings.

“I am delighted with the outcomes of the recent inspection of the school,” he said,

“School improvement does not happen overnight and the extremely positive report is richly deserved and testimony to the work of all teaching and support staff, governors and parents over quite a period of time.

“It accurately reflects Spen Valley Sports College – a school where ‘standards reached by students by the time they leave school have risen year on year’, where ‘teaching is good overall and some is outstanding’ and where ‘students enjoy school and show positive attitudes to learning’.

“I would like to thank all stakeholders for their contribution to making such a positive report possible and in particular congratulate our ‘polite, courteous and inquisitive’ students, for whom we will continue to move the school forwards and develop it even further.”

Ofsted looked at four key areas: pupils’ achievement, the quality of teaching, the behaviour and safety of pupils and leadership and management, and was judged ‘good’ in each.
