Tory backing anti-BNP campaign

THE Tory Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Batley and Spen has thrown her weight behind an internet campaign decrying the British National Party's politics.

Janice Small is backing the 'Nothing British' campaign launched by senior figures in the armed forces and veterans who are angry over the BNP's claims to support the forces. The campaign features a website where supporters can pledge that there's nothing British about the BNP's policies.

Mrs Small has also vowed to fight the BNP in Batley and Spen in the run up to next year's general election.

"The mainstream political parties have failed to do deal with the growing numbers of people who feel they are not represented. This has been reflected in the Yorkshire and the Humber region sending a BNP candidate to Brussels and Heckmondwike falling prey to the seemingly 'acceptable' face of the BNP at local council elections," she said.

"I fought the National Front in the early 1980s and joined rock against racism marches. I continue to fight the rise of the fascism in Europe and the UK. I will fight them in Batley and Spen."

Her comments come in the same week as claims that support for the BNP in Yorkshire is falling, and party leader Nick Griffin appearing on the BBC's Question Time.

Mrs Small added: "It is my duty as someone who wishes to represent the people of Batley and Spen to take the BNP head on and to expose their tactics. That is why I am supporting the 'Nothing British' campaign. My view is that we have to be tough on immigration and this is supported by generation immigrants that came to this country legally.

"I urge people to log onto the site and stand alongside people like General Sir Mike Jackson, Andy McNab, Simon Weston and Colonel Tim Collins, to stop the BNP hijacking British military symbols."

She also criticised the BNP's 2005 general election manifesto over promises to curb foreign trade exports and deportation of all immigrants.

David Exley, BNP organiser in Kirklees, said that the party only used the imagery during the European election campaign, which was now over.

He said: "There are a lot more important things to worry about than this – we're in the middle of a major recession and our troops are dying abroad. It's pathetic that our opponents are discussing this.

"Let's have an open debate on the real topics and let the general public decide at next year's elections."
