Tourists head off on Jubilee jollies

AS the Jubilee bank holiday weekend approaches, many of us will be preparing for street parties, hanging up bunting and looking forward to a right royal knees-up.

But for some, the upcoming four-day break is the perfect chance to jet off to warmer climes.

Travel agents in North Kirklees have seen holidaymakers take advantage of the Jubilee celebrations by leaving the country altogether.

Pat Thornes, owner of High Ridings Travel in Birstall, said a few customers had moved their travel plans forward to the Jubilee weekend.

“We’ve got a number of people that are escaping the country,” she said.

“Spain is always popular, as well as European city breaks.”

QPS Travel in Dewsbury has also seen a rise in bookings for the Jubilee weekend.

Manager Bashir Mayat said: “We have seen a lot of people book to go away.

“A lot of people have booked Barcelona, Spain, and the Algarve in Portugal, as well as holidays to Egypt.”

Kevin Matthews, owner of 360 Global Travel in Cleckheaton, said some of his customers had planned in advance to use the Jubilee for a holiday.

He said: “ A lot of people have taken advantage of the extra day’s bank holiday not eating into their annual holidays and they have taken the opportunity to have the week off, especially with it being the school holidays as well.”

Mr Matthews added that Majorca and Lanzarote had proved most popular with travellers, with many holidaymakers also jetting off to the Algarve.

In fact, staying in the UK could prove stressful – people planning a trip to the capital to celebrate the Queen’s 60 years on the throne have been advised to plan their journeys online before leaving home.

Motorists are advised to avoid London altogether, with roads, bridges and parks closed across the city for the Jubilee celebrations.
