Tributes to 'gentle Eddie'

FRIENDS paid tribute to a much-loved Cleckheaton Folk Festival stalwart who was found dead last Thursday.

Road sweeper Edward Thorpe, 58, was found at his home in Howard Street, Batley Carr, having suffered head injuries.

A 25-year-old man has been charged with his murder.

Richard Edward Thorpe appeared before Dewsbury magistrates on Saturday and is due to appear at Leeds Crown Court today.

Folk Festival director Geoff Pickles paid tribute to a talented singer-songwriter who was also the festival's official photographer.

He said: "We're all completely shocked. It's come out of the blue and it wasn't his time to go.

"He was cheerful, he'd talk to anyone. He was a very gentle man who wouldn't say boo to a goose, and that came out in the songs he wrote. We have thousands of photographs he took of the festival over the years. He was a very likeable guy and everybody involved in the festival will miss him very much."
