Trophies galore in four years

THEY might only have been in the league for four years, but in that short time they were so successful that their trophy cabinet was positively bulging.

Scholes FC twice won the Harrison Trophy and this photograph shows the winning team having beaten Littletown by three goals to two in the final at Beck Lane in Heckmondwike.

It was loaned to us by Barry Audley, one of the great local footballers of that era, who captained the side. He is pictured in the middle of the front row.

Scholes won promotion in their first season and drew a number of their players from the defunct Gomersal Mills team.

They had a great band of local supporters and were regularly top for attendances in the Spen valley League.

During their four years they were division two champions, won the Harrison Trophy twice and the Challenge Cup twice.

Pictured are, back row from left: Michael Jagger, John Jagger, Alan Thornber, John Purcell (goalkeeper), Bob Heaton and Alan Shaw. Front row: Roy Cruchlow, Brian Gillard, Barry Audley, Brian Gledhill and Brian Cooper.
