Anouska Kay/Ross Parry A truck was overturned in an early morning accident on the M62 near Bradford.

A COUPLE were killed when their car was crushed by a lorry on the M62.

The husband and wife, named locally as Mark and Tamsie Mchale, died on Wednesday when a Mercedes lorry towing a container collided with their white Audi A5 while both vehicles were travelling on the entry slip road to J26 at Chain Bar.

Mr Mchale, 46, and his 43-year-old wife, from Bishop Auckland, died at the scene.

Mr Mchale owned HairHaus Hair and Beauty Salon in Bishop Auckland.

Hundreds of tributes were left on the salon’s Facebook page to the popular couple who were said to live life to the full.

Staff at the salon said: “We are all absolutely gutted by what has happened but in the words of Mark himself, PTI – power through it!

“RIP boss and Tamsie. You will be massively missed. Love Kendra and the team.”

The lorry driver, a 43-year-old man from North East Lincolnshire, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The westbound carriageway was closed between J25 and J26 from about 5.50am until about 5pm while the accident was cleared.

Westbound entry sliproads were also closed at J28 at Tingley and J27 at Birstall to prevent drivers entering queues.

Tailbacks stretching for miles were reported as traffic was diverted through Spen and Mirfield.

The Highways Agency provided temporary toilet facilities and bottled water off the motorway.

Witnesses are asked to contact the major collision enquiry team on 01924 293047.
