Two trapped in smash on motorway

TWO motorists were trapped following a crash on the M62 near Cleckheaton.

The accident happened at 10.14am on Sunday, and involved an Audi Q3 and a Vauxhall Corsa.

It happened on the eastbound carriageway between junctions 26 and 27. The driver of the Audi managed to free herself from the wreckage, while the driver of the Corsa had to be rescued by fire crews from Odsal and Morley.

All three lanes of the carriageway were closed until after 11am. Both were taken to hospital but their injuries were not thought to be serious.

The incident came less than a week after the crash on the same stretch of road, when a lorry overturned and two people were killed.

A spokesman from the Highways Agency confirmed that a meeting would take place today to discuss the accessability of the road to emergency services, which is currently part of a managed motorways scheme.

He said: “There is an agreement and procedure in place for emergency services to use the works hard shoulder to access incidents during the M62 managed motorway upgrade project if vehicles are unable or struggling to navigate the motorway itself.

“The procedure will also be discussed at a meeting with West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service today.

“This meeting follows a monthly traffic management update with emergency services representatives, including West Yorkshire Police and West Yorkshire Ambluance Service, with the aim of ensuring crews can respond to incidents safely and efficiently.”
