Around 200 students from across Yorkshire visited a Nazi death camp with the Holocaust Educational Trust.

Reporter Samantha Robinson was invited to join them for the one-day trip to Poland on Wednesday, which included prisoner of war camp Auschwitz I and death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.

The Trust’s Lessons from Auschwitz project is based on the premise that “hearing is not like seeing” and encourages participants to share their experience with their schools and the wider community.

Karen Pollock MBE, chief executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust, said the project allowed young people to learn about the Holocaust in a way they cannot in the classroom.

She said: “The visit enables young people to see for themselves where racism, prejudice and antisemitism can ultimately lead and its importance is demonstrated by the inspiring work students go on to do in their local communities.”
