VIDEO: UFO LANTERN THEORY

THE truth is out there ... We can reveal the true nature of mysterious UFOs that floated across the skies on New Year's Eve.

Olywn Dyson, of Wilton, Batley, was filming fireworks from her home on Laurel Grove when she spotted the unidentified flying objects, one over Wilton Park and two out towards Birstall.

She caught the images on her mobile phone and we featured the video on our website.

Now people from across North Kirklees have come forward to identify the mysterious objects.

Rather than spacecraft piloted by little green men, they appear to have been Chinese lanterns launched by revellers.

Among those who set off the lanterns were Jim Batty and Ben Smith, of Mirfield.

Jim, of Sunways, Mirfield, thinks the ones spotted by Olwyn could have been his.

He said: "We set some off on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. They're silent and create a very bright light.

"It's just a bit of a laugh to set them off - especially when you've had a drink.

"They're made of anti-inflamatory paper and they burn out and fall to the ground after about 15 minutes."

Jane Riddiough, of Syke Ings Terrace, Earlsheaton, also let off Chinese lanterns on New Year's Eve.

She said: "They do look like UFOs. There's a little charcoal square that heats up and you wait until it ignites and they float into the sky. There were 25 people at our party so they had one each. We usually have fireworks on New Year's Eve, but these were something a bit different.

"We did the same thing for our daughter's 21st in Pickering and later we saw on You Tube there had been 'UFO' sightings over Catterick Barracks."

Michelle Danby, of Hunsworth, was another witness to the strange sights.

She said: "At first I thought it was a firework, but it wasn't. I'd never seen anything like it. It was over the field near our house. It was very strange. It had an orange light, like fire around it. My son, Jordan, who's eight, saw it as well. He said it looked like a UFO."

We put the Chinese lantern theory to the test and took our own video of the results. Is it conclusive proof?
