Walkabout with Princess Elizabeth...
WE'VE found two more pictures of the 1949 Royal visit in our archives which readers might like to see.
It was the first visit by Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh to West Yorkshire, and before arriving in Spen, they had been to Halifax and Huddersfield.
As their limousine passed the Fountain pub in Roberttown, they were greeted by a huge Welcome to Spenborough banner which spanned the road
.
The cavalcade proceeded down Leeds Road which was lined with children from Roberttown and Norristhorpe schools.
After passing the Globe pub at Millbridge, they continued to the Swan, turning left towards Cleckheaton where the crowds thronged the streets.
They paused momentarily outside the Miller and Dyer Inn at Rawfolds where the Princess was presented with bouquets by the Gomersal British Legion of Peace Miss E G Barker, and the Spen Valley Queen of Industry Jean Shann.
The royal party then made its way past the Market Place which was packed with 1,000 children and towards Moorend and the BBA Scandinavia Mills where they met workers and enjoyed tea in the works canteen.
The couple were presented with a teddy bear to give to their first-born, Prince Charles – a gift from the BBA workers – before they left for the next leg of their West Yorkshire tour.
