What to look out for at the war weekend

The fields of Hunsworth will be transformed into a battlefield this summer as the village hosts its second annual war weekend.

The Yorkshire Wartime Experience will run from July 5-7 and organisers are hoping the sun will shine on this year’s event, after last year’s deluge turned the fields into a quagmire.

Stuart Wright said despite last year’s atrocious weather, which affected visitor numbers, those who came had thoroughly enjoyed it and they were keen to make it an annual event.

“Like last year, the first day will be for schools only and give them a taste of what it was like on the front line and also what it was like to live through the war,” said Stuart.

“Then on the Saturday and Sunday, it will be open to the public and there will be a host of military vehicles, re-enactments, pyrotechnics and 1940s style entertainment. We’re also hoping to get a flypast by either the Red Arrows, or a Battle of Britain aircraft.”

The weekend will also raise money for local charities.
