Winter of 1947
LAST week's Looking Back feature on the Big Freeze of 1962/63 brought back memories for our readers.
But as bad as that winter was, it was nothing compared to the winter of 1947 – as these photographs clearly illustrate.
The pictures have been kindly loaned to us by Margaret Croft who was two years old at the time and lived in Hunsworth.
The village was badly affected by the snow with drifts many feet deep.
"We lived with my grandparents, May and Thomas Croft, in one of the semi-detached houses in the photograph," she said.
"I can't really remember much about the winter of 1947, except that there was ice on the inside of the window in my little bedroom and I used to scratch away at it and make little patterns.
"I do remember the bad winter of 1962/63 though because I was older and we were living in South Parade, Cleckheaton. Our house was the only one which didn't have frozen pipes so the neighbours were coming and going all the time filling up with our water.
"I also remember going up to the Lake District for the day – my grandparents had a caravan there – and Lake Windermere was completely frozen over for the first time in decades.
"The ice was tested at Bowness and it was 12-14 inches thick. There were even cars parked on it and I remember we walked across it to the little island in the middle!"
