Wood opens his books

SPEN MP MIKE Wood made a clean breast of his expenses as Heckmondwike's Shahid Malik was left fighting for his political career in a second week of revelations which have rocked Westminster.

Mr Malik stepped down as Justice Minister on Friday while an inquiry is held into allegations that he underpaid the market value for renting his constituency home and office contrary to the Ministerial Code.

However he remains defiant and says he has done nothing wrong, or to apologise for, and is confident the inquiry will clear his name.

His allowances, as revealed by the Daily Telegraph, showed he claimed 2,100 for a flatscreen television (he was eventually paid 1,050), 730 for a massage chair and had a request for a 300 iPod rejected. They have sparked fury from many of his constituents.

In contrast Mr Wood has decided to make his expenses public, before Parliament reveals all MPs' allowances in July.

He says he does not have a lavish lifestyle living in a modest constituency home and a flat in the third poorest borough in London.

Both MPs have backed claims for the expenses system to be overhauled to restore the public's confidence in the parliamentary system.
