A local businesswoman will be the first to speak at a new networking event aimed at working mothers in Mirfield.

Ellie MacDonald, who launched PR and marketing firm MacComms four months ago, was approached to be the first speaker to offer local women in business marketing and PR tips and advice at a unique networking session.

The national support group BizMums aims to bring mums in business together with networking opportunities. The group will launch in Kirklees and Calderdale this September and Ellie will speak at The Three Nuns, Mirfield on Monday September 14 from 10am–1pm. Huddersfield and Halifax events will also launch in the same monthly.

The recently appointed West Yorkshire co-ordinator for BizMums is Rebecca Cookin, owner of Recoco Woman, a boutique ‘on the go’ set up help women shop in their own homes.

“I set up in October 2013 and realised in my first year of business that it’s a whole lot harder than I expected. I spent so much more money than I needed to and struggled to get help finding funding, mentoring and support and I therefore felt very alone, stressed and a bit hopeless. After speaking to other female business owners I found that I wasn’t alone. So I set up the Women in Business Facebook page to help support women who are in similar situations.”

Rebecca then came across BizMums just five weeks after she gave birth to her daughter.

“I thought I wouldn’t be able to go back to work for a good while after having my baby, but when you’re running your own business it’s not an option to completely switch off.

“I was therefore inspired to create BizMums offering me and fellow mums in business the opportunity to network whilst having our children with us to take away the pressure of choosing one over the other.”

She is now looking forward to welcoming Ellie to the meet-up.

“I may not be a mum but I appreciate all business owners need support, particularly mums for whom there are very few options to combine childcare with networking. I’m flattered to have been asked to speak so early into the formation of my own business and I’m looking forward to extending my network further,” she said.
