A SPEN school has welcomed a new headteacher.

Ian Ellam joined Spen Valley Sports College at the start of the new term on Monday. Mr Ellam has 30 years’ teaching experience and has previously worked in Wakefield and Barnsley.

He said: “I trained as a science teacher – I still enjoy teaching science and I aim to continue that here.

“I was joint headteacher at my last school for a year so I have cut my teeth in headship, but this is my first fully fledged position as a headteacher. I read a lot about the sports college before making the decision to apply and I got some very positive vibes about the school. Everything I read and heard has transpired to be true. The students are warm and genuine, and I am very privileged to be working with caring and committed staff. My first impressions are very favourable.”

Mr Ellam said he wanted to build on the school’s strengths, adding: “The last year 11 has recorded the school’s best ever GCSE results, which is testament to the hard work of the young people and the staff, and the support from parents and governors. The school is intent on using this as a springboard for success in the future. I am particularly interested in how the school can better engage families in the learning process.

“Schools are about communities and my sense is this is a real community school.”

The school also has 12 new members of staff, who started on Monday.
