A NEW dawn has begun for Cleckheaton’s churches with the formation of the new Spen Valley Mothers’ Union branch.
A service was held at St Luke’s Church last week to see the closure of two older branches and the formation of the new one which will meet for the first time next month.
Guests included the Deputy Mayor of Kirklees Coun Christine Iredale, Mothers’ Union provincial president Lynne Tembey and diocesan president Monica Dodds.
Member Shirley Auty said: “It was a wonderful service and quite emotional as well.
“The banners from all of the previous branches were used in a procession through the church and placed around the altar.”
The new group will meet for the first time on March 10, at Scholes Church Hall, to appoint a committee and will decide on a programme of fund raising and activities to benefit a project in Uganda.
Deanery chairman Trees Fewster said: “To join the Mothers’ Union, you don’t have to be married or have children, or even be a woman! Our national chief executive is a man.
“To become a member, you must have been baptised within the Christian faith.”
The new branch will be based within the Birstall Deanery of Mothers’ Unions.
