Michael Wright, a well-known funeral director from Cleckheaton, has died at the age of 69.
Mr Wright, who had been ill with cancer for three years, was associated with the family-run business Michael A Wright and Son of Farfield Street, Cleckheaton, as well as Naylor and Grysdale, of Lightcliffe Road, Brighouse.
He was a member, past president and fellow of the British Institute of Funeral Directors, past president of the British Institute of Embalmers and member of the National Association of Funeral Directors.
Mr Wright was born and bred in Cleckheaton, attending South Parade School, and lived in the town all his life.
He started his career as a joiner working for the Co-operative Funeral Directors in Cleckheaton, Bradford and Keighley.
His daughter, Jayne, said: “He actually joined the Cleckheaton Co-operative Funeral Services when it was in Farfield Street and helped build its chapel of rest.
“Later he came back to Cleckheaton to run his own funeral business from the same premises.
“My brother, Mark, worked alongside him there until some years ago, when he took over the Cleckheaton branch and my father looked after the Brighouse branch.
“Even when people were suffering under the most stressful and difficult of circumstances, he always managed to make them smile.
“Everyone always used to comment that he had this great gift for making families smile.”
Mr Wright leaves a wife Anne, Mark, Jayne, daughter-in law Karen and two grandchildren, Ellie and Oliver.
Jayne added: “He was a great family man – always the one to arrange parties and gatherings – and was well-known for his sense of humour.
“He had a larger-than-life personality and he was always making people laugh. He was also very proud of being a Yorkshireman.
“The business will continue to be run as a family business.”
Mr Wright’s funeral will be held at St Luke’s Church, Cleckheaton, on Monday at noon followed by cremation at Park Wood, Elland, at 12.45pm.
