AN open day is being held to attract new members to an activity group aimed at men over 50 in the Spen Valley.

Men in Spen will hold a public exhibition with taster sessions at the Spen Pool to promote the newly established group. There will be opportunities to try indoor kurling, cycling and chair workouts.

The group recently launched a reminiscence workshop at Cleckheaton Library, led by John Yearsley, which has now been made into a monthly event. Members are encouraged to bring in items of memorabilia and there will be a different theme for each event.

The project has been set up inititially by Age Concern Calderdale and Kirklees to provide social activities for older men.

Organiser Kate Billson said: “It’s going very well so far. We want to attract more men and we have a good core group of men on the advisory committee.

“The idea is for the open day — on April 12 — to get more men here who would not normally come along.”

The pool will also be available for the men to use for free during the open day.

It takes place on Tuesday from 10am-3pm at Spenborough Baths.
