HIGH-flying aerobatic display team the Red Arrows is coming to Spen.
The team, regarded as the best in the world, will be doing a fly-past in the skies over the valley for the Yorkshire Wartime Experience war weekend in Hunsworth in June.
Organiser Stuart Wright said he was stunned to have received confirmation this week that the elite squadron would be attending.
“They are only allowed a certain number of events each year, and with 2012 being the year of the London Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, I thought there was even less chance of us getting them,” he said.
“We are absolutely ecstatic. It’s a real coup, particularly with it being our first ever event.”
The war weekend, on a 30 acre site at Hunsworth Lane, near the Savile Arms, runs from June 22-24, and will raise money for the Royal British Legion and the SSAFA Armed Forces charities
The Friday is reserved for 900 children from 12 schools, and it will be open to the public on the Saturday and Sunday, with re-enactments, live-firing displays, tanks and other military vehicles and pyrotechnics.
The fly past takes place on the Sunday at a time to be confirmed.
