Paul on winning form with swinging sounds

KING OF SWING: Birkenshaw singer Paul Stone.

KING OF SWING: Birkenshaw singer Paul Stone.

A SENSATIONAL swing singer from Spen has unveiled his debut album to radio listeners up and down the country.

Paul Stone, from Birkenshaw, had a track from Reprise Of Swing played on Paul O’Grady’s BBC Radio 2 show on Sunday, just hours after he put the record up for sale.

He has been singing and playing music for his whole life, picking up the violin at six, the piano at nine and the drums aged 14.

Now the former Batley Grammar School pupil is hoping Reprise Of Swing will see all of his hard work pay off.

The album features tracks by Bill Withers, Sting and U2, as well as come of Paul’s own compositions.

The 30-year-old studied music at Leeds College of Music but ended up working in the construction industry to save up the money to pursue his dream career.

Eventually, after countless gigs at clubs, corporate events and on cruise liners – not to mention a show with music legends the Osmonds and appearances of BBC Radio Leeds– he caught the eye of Radio Two’s music bosses.

Paul’s album was recorded in just two days at the Sphere and Real World Studios in London and is now available to download from iTunes.

It was originally scheduled for release in March, but the date was brought forward to capitalise on last weekend’s national radio exposure, which saw Paul O’Grady play Paul’s version of Sex On Fire by American indie-rock band Kings Of Leon
