CLECKHEATON street sweeper Phil Clarkson is swapping his dust cart for a bicycle as he prepares for a gruelling ride through South East Asia – in aid of the British Heart Foundation (BHF).

Phil is setting off for Vietnam in November for the 10 day, 527km ride across the border into Cambodia, but is looking for help from Spen folk to reach his fund raising target.

He needs more than £3,500 to take part in the trek, with all the proceeds going towards the heart charity.

“I wanted to get involved with something that’s both fun and exciting, but also for a good cause,” Phil said.

“I lost my mother to a heart condition when I was in my 20s, so I had no qualms with choosing the British Heart Foundation because they do such good work.

“To be able to go on the trip you need to raise more than £3,000 plus a registration fee. I’ve paid the fee, so I’m committed and there’s no turning back now.

“I’m just hoping that some kind people in Cleckheaton will be able to contribute.”

His first good samaritan is Renew Windows boss Glenn Morrill has got the ball rolling by pledging £250 to the cause.

Glenn said: “Phil’s a loyal customer and he asked me for help, so I was more than happy to make a donation. I just wanted to lend him a hand to get him on his way.”

Phil is taking the ride seriously and is already training for the day he touches down in Ho Chi Minh and will also take in the sights of Angkor Wat – one of the wonders of the world.

Phil added: “I’m going out for two hours at a time and building up my stamina. I’ve been on the Greenway but now I need to do more hills.

“I just hope people can support this good cause and any donations are gratefully received. Stop me in the street and ask me about it.”
