Yorkshire’s best pork pie is closer than you might think.

B and M Collins butchers in Westgate, Cleckheaton, has won first place in the small pie category of the Great Yorkshire Pork Pie, Sausage and Products competition.

The family firm beat away competition from all over the county and was presented with the award at a bash in the Cedar Court Hotel in Bradford.

Margory Collins, from the butcher’s shop, said: “We were over the moon when we found out that we had won – we’d only entered the competition after a customer suggested we should.

“But we didn’t make a special pie for the competition – the ones we entered were the same ones that we sell in the shop, because we were confident that they were good.”

While she wouldn’t reveal any secrets about the recipe, Margory said the secret to a good pie was to take time and care with making it.

She said: “I think what makes our pies so special are the ingredients, and we really take care with making each one.”

The shop also won the overall reserve supreme champion award for the pies.

The family business has been based in Westgate for 35 years, but Margory said they would not be changing their recipes any time soon!
