HECKMONDWIKE’s Royal Mail delivery office could be closed – meaning customers would have to travel to Batley to pick up undelivered mail.
The delivery office in Oldfield Lane could close under a ‘scoping exercise’ being carried out by Royal Mail, with its work being transferred to the Batley delivery office in Grange Valley Road at least three miles away.
Royal Mail spokeswoman Morag Turnbull said the organisation was keeping all its units under review because of declining mail volumes and tough trading conditions.
She said: “We must respond to the huge growth in electronic communications and the resulting decline in overall mail volumes.
“In the UK, mail volumes have declined by 40 per cent in the past five years.
“We now deliver on average 59 million items a day. With this decline we must modernise our operations and the consolidation of delivery offices will play a major part in allowing us to place the business on a sound, secure and stable footing.
“At this stage we are simply considering our options and no final decision has been made regarding our operations at Heckmondwike.
“However, we have shared our plans for this scoping exercise with our people and will continue to work with them and the unions in the future.”
