HUNDREDS of Cleckheaton residents could face a huge insurance bill after a power surge caused by copper thieves at the weekend.
Households around Pyenot area of the town awoke on Sunday morning to find themselves without electricity. In some houses, electrical appliances such as televisions, computers and boilers burst into flames due to the power surge.
The power sub-station was targetted by thieves on Saturday night, who made off with more than £1,000 worth of copper wiring, causing a huge surge.
Around 294 homes were affected by the surge and home owners now face the task of claiming on their home insurance for the damage, which could increase their premiums and incurr them extra charges.
